MUSINGS

Life after the office

I retired in September 2024. People often ask me now: "How do you like retirement?" I reply: "I love it. Every week is like one Sunday and six Saturdays."

I often wake up asking: "Now what day is it today?"

I play table tennis twice or a more a week. I'm getting better, although I am still low in my ranking. I play at the Westchester Table Tennis Center in Pleasantville. The center is one of the biggest in the US. Will Shortz, the owner, and also the crossword puzzle editor for the New York Times, likes to say that "there are elite clubs and there are friendly clubs; the Westchester center is the very few which are both elite and friendly." This certainly seems true to me.

If I take care of my health, there is going to be 25 of 30 years of living to do. The question is "what do I want to have as a legacy?" I guess a portfolio of paintings might be a start, but a bigger aim would be to leave the world a better place than when I started in it. One of my favorite fortune cookies I got many years ago was: "Kindness is the greatest wisdom." In this regard then, I wish to be wise in my dealings with my friends and those around me.
